The internet is just full of information.  Below are some websites for population data:

A massive central data source and a handy way to graphically compare nations.


census.gov
Check here for the official results of the 2000 census.

Some statistics collected by the United Nations.

The trick with all of this information is how to present it online so it can be easily searched.  Hans Rosling has an idea about that.  His website project,GapMinder.org allows you to visually interact with all this online data.  It's well worth checking out.  Here's an example:
