In earlier versions of Word, you can edit in Print Preview. Simply click the Magnifier icon on the Print Preview toolbar (in 2003) to disable that tool. In Word 2007, uncheck Magnifier in the Preview group on the Print Preview toolbar. When you do so, the insertion point reverts to the I-beam you're used to working with in Normal view. Edit away!
This behavior has changed a bit with Word 2010. It's the same basic experience you get using 2003 and 2010—it just isn't easy to find! In a nutshell, you add the Print Preview Edit Mode option to the Quick Access Toolbar (QAT). For better or worse, it looks just like the Print Preview and Print option, so if you use both, you'll just have to remember which icon does what.
To add this option to the QAT, do the following:
  1. Click the Customize Quick Access Toolbar dropdown arrow (the arrow to the right of the toolbar icons).
  2. Choose More Commands at the bottom of the list.
  3. Choose All Commands from the Choose Commands From list.
  4. Browse down and highlight Print Preview Edit Mode.
  5. Click Add.
  6. Click OK.
Click Print Preview Edit Mode to view the current document in Print Preview. Then, follow the above instructions to toggle between zooming and editing.
